The first broadcast of a telenovela in Brazil coincided with the very beginnings of the television. Initially recognisable by the influence of the radio and the melodramatic style of Latin-American series, telenovelas have been continuously evolving since the sixties and fast became an audiovisual symbol of Brazilian identity.
The telenovelas stories take place in Brazil and adopt the language of everyday Brazilian speech.
